Anne Frank and her family originally lived in Germany, but during the early thirties when Hitler came to power, they migrated to Holland where for a time, they lived normal lives. Mr. Frank was actively engaged in business; the children, Margo and her younger sister Anne, attended school.
But when the Nazis occupied Holland the family, because they were Jews, were forced to flee again. For want of another refuge, they remained in Amsterdam, hiding in the abandoned half of an old office building. Anne was thirteen years old at this time.
Soon the Franks were joined in the "Secret Annexe" by another family, Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan, and their son Peter, who was about Anne's age, and by a Mr. Drussel, a dentist, and, according to Anne, rather stuffy.
