This book from The Hans Christian Andersen 2000 medal of honor winner Ana Maria Machado portrays the story of an African American girl and a white rabbit. The Rabbit falls in love with the girl, finding her skin color astonishing and asks her how she got it; the girl keeps making up stories about how she ended up with black skin making it a humorous and refreshing story for younger readers (k-2). It was originally published in 1986 in Brazil and it was a beautiful approach to diversity in children’s literature, including topics such as race, family and positive self-image. Besides being a good book to start conversations about race and beauty in every skin color, it is also a good mentor text to introduce or study realistic fiction.
